What are the issues, the second-hand effects, and the standards for the wireless technologies?
Life on earth has evolved amidst a broad band of electromagnetic frequencies, which originate from throughout the universe. By 1980, environmental exposure to artificial, repetitive or random signals in the radiofrequency / microwave band had risen dramatically – by more than a trillion times, mostly for military technology.

Since 1980, mostly for newly-introduced commercial applications, the average “second-hand” exposure in Southern Canada has risen from about 0.005 microWatt/cm2 to the current background environmental range of 0.4 to 100.0 µWatt/cm2. We note an 8 to 20,000-fold increase with peaks in downtown Toronto and some centres, including Brantford and Mississauga. About 100 square kilometres in Southern Ontario have environmental broadband radiofrequency and microwave power emission exposures during timeframes that can exceed the Health Canada Safety Code 6 exposure limit of approximately 0.6 to 1 milliWatt/cm2 (600 - 1,000microWatt/cm2). Such illegal irradiation coverage can be expected to rise exponentially to several hundred square kilometres in both Ontario and Quebec by the end of this decade, on a more persistent basis, as more and more wireless technologies are approved by governments and marketed. Note that individuals within such exposed zones may experience a continual body temperature rise, with time, (but actually “feel” colder, and may seek greater warmth).

Brief Synopsis of the dangers of EMF’s and mobile phone/ Wi-Fi masts and how they can affect our health

Currently The National Radiation Protection Board (NRPB)(UK) produce guidelines (set in 1993) which provide us with supposedly safe levels of radiation - levels, however, which are considerably higher than other countries where research into this subject has led to a number of scientists and scientific bodies significantly reducing their exposure levels. The magnitude of the gulf in thinking between the NRPB and other scientific bodies/governments is alarming. It is difficult to imagine how the NRPB can continue to maintain that an investigative exposure level of 10000mW/cm2 (100W/m2) is safe when in 1995 the New Zealand Environment Court (as the Planning Tribunal) in the case of MacIntyre vs. BellSouth set a level of 2mW/cm2 as a precautionary approach - a level 5000 times less than that set by the NRPB! Note on the South African situation

Whilst the rest of Africa appears to be paying attention to the matter, the South African Government appears to be burying its head in the sand or choosing to be selectively ignorant of the dangers and the impact it is having on our children and communities.

New legislation which has not been publicized apparently states that in Gauteng no further EIA’s will need to be done from the 2nd August 2010 except in parks and nature conservation areas. This will be a complete violation of our constitutional rights. Who was responsible for slipping this through and for whose benefit ? Certainly not for the citizens of South Africa who are being affected daily by the proliferation of wireless technology that is uncontrolled and not monitored. Even GDARD who sign off the masts currently, cannot provide a grid of where all the masts are placed and neither can ICASA the body that issues the licences. Hundreds of illegal masts already exist with no EIA’s in place. Landowners and landlords who accept the option to have a mast on their property of building may jointly face large claims of loss of property value and the health impacts that will follow.

It is horrific that the operators still persist on placing masts – cell or wifi on school grounds. Why will they not provide a letter of guarantee that there will be no impact on a child’s health or the community they force it upon ? Because they know it does.

People are advising daily that they have been and are being affected and the operators involved choose to ignore their pleas.
There appears to be no prior investigation as to the number of existing masts in an area and the collective EMF levels that exist in the area.

The Bioinitiative levels are 0.6 v/m ( volts per square metre for outside collective safety levels and 0.194 v/m for the total collective inside levels). Even these levels were only considered interim safety levels and there have been no levels recorded as safe for children. The operators and the supposed independent companies that do the readings keep hiding behind ICNIRP which also states on page 546 :

“ Different groups in a population may have differences in their ability to tolerate a particular NIR exposure. For example children, the elderly and some chronically ill people might have a lower tolerance for one or more forms of NIR exposure than the rest of the population. Under such circumstances it may be necessary to develop separate guideline levels for different groups within the general population, but it may be more effective to adjust the guidelines for the general population to include such groups ”

In affect an area should be canvassed and checked prior to any installation taking place. It also carries on to state “ Some guidelines may still not provide protection for certain sensitive individuals nor for normal individuals exposed concomitantly to other agents, which may exacerbate the effect of the NIR exposure, an example being with an individual with photosensitivity”

The talk of blanketing whole cities in South Africa with WIFI is reckless and truly shows that there is no thought on the long term effects of our families, especially our children who are more susceptible. One private school that placed wifi in the school had reports of headaches, rashes, nausea, dizziness and severe allergic reactions following the installation. We need to stay hard-wired wherever possible and Telkom is to provide that service or give it to someone who can roll it out safely with government support. Optic fibre is being used in France to protect their children and citizens from unnecessary EM exposure.
