Cellmast Awareness Protest
In conjunction with the Waldorf School concerned Constantia residents are planning a peaceful protest to inform and educate the students and community and to raise concerns about the erection of these cell masts with outdated guidelines.
We believe it is especially incumbent on those with knowledge to stand up for those in less advantaged communities where these towers are erected in or near the playgrounds of schools.
The media will be present as well as other concerned communities. Here are the key points available in depth at www.emrsa.co.za
As of Aug 2010, citizens are no longer informed or given opportunity to object to cellphone towers up to 15m in height being erected on neighbouring property (and often disguised).
Cape Townians have until 31 Aug to comment on the new cellmast policy which has not been updated since 2002 and still relies on the guidelines of 1998 which didn’t take the non-thermal biological effects into account.
In May 2011, the WHO re-classified radio frequency radiation as a class 2B carcinogen, placing it now in the same category as lead, DDT and asbestos.
In the same month the EU Parliamentary Assembly Report advised a revision in the current threshold values to avoid “very high health and economic costs” down the line.
A recent study by Brazilian scientists reported that 80% of people who died in the capital from cancer between 1996 and 2006 lived less than 500m from the 300 cellphone towers installed in the city.
Time: 9:45am, Friday 12 Aug 2011
Venue: Waldorf School, Spaanschemat Rd
Please join this protest and urge others to do the same as the consequences of this policy will be far reaching for all down the line.
